Gallery One in Ocean View this announced their new show, “Going Green,” the first show for 2010, which features 16 local artists displaying their interpretation of the show’s title.
“This is the first of monthly challenges for the gallery artists to create on a common theme,” representatives said. “Patrons look forward to each new show on the theme wall for the energy and creativity. Also, each artist has their own space to display work of their own choosing, which change monthly. This gives an in-depth look of each artist’s style and vision.”
The phrase “Going Green” today often represents living a lifestyle that is conscious of our impact on the environment. As 16 artists ponder the phrase, they search to develop the theme with personal and interesting takes on the phrase of “going green.”
The beauty and fragility of local wetlands struck two artists as their subject for their paintings. Jeanne Mueller painted a “View of Whites Creek.” She concentrated on the show of greens from the blue-greens to the golden grasses, which are viewed near her home. Dianne Shearon painted “Wetlands in the Winter,” showing a hint of green in the chilled atmosphere. Both artists wrote that they thought of the wetlands not only for their beauty but also the contribution this type of land gives to wildlife and the environment.
“Wearing of the Green” is a phrase that brings a smile to many who celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in March or enjoy the culture and ancestry of Ireland. “Abby Shadows, County Tipperary,” a watercolor by Dale Sheldon, was painted after a recent emotional trip to Ireland. The architectural ruins of the 13th century Cistercian monastery, set in an atmospheric overlook view, created a sense of peace and respect for the passage of time.
A colorist, Lesley McCaskill chose to work with the hue green, which dominates the landscape for most of the year. Using as a vast range of the color, “House in Nassau” shows the passing majesty of an aged farmhouse that backs up to Route 1. McCaskill remarked that the color was used symbolically, using the warm fresh greens showing the lively activity on route one and then the bronzed greens working as a patina to play up the aging of the landscape.
These are just a few samples of the work in the current show, and 12 other artists have work displayed for the show.
The public is being invited to visit Gallery One to view this show and see the other art work the gallery shows – jewelry, pottery, textiles, digital art and more paintings made by local artists. Uniquely, Gallery One is always staff by one of the artists and is open daily, year round. Winter hours are now in effect, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is located at 32 Atlantic Avenue in Ocean View, on Route 26, west of Bethany Beach.
