Legislators to announce major new green initiative

BALTIMORE, MD - On Tuesday, November 23, 2010 Delaware Senator Tom Carper will join Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) Director Michael R. Bromwich and Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley in announcing a major new initiative to accelerate the responsible placement and development of wind energy projects up and down the Atlantic coast.

Understanding the clean air and economic benefits offshore wind energy could provide the state of Delaware and our nation, Sen. Carper has been a leading advocate for legislative and regulatory initiatives that would support offshore wind energy projects, including the initiatives that will be outlined at Tuesday's press conference. In Congress, Sen. Carper has authored or coauthored several pieces of legislation to support the offshore wind industry, including bipartisan legislation introduced last March, the Carper-Snowe-Brown-Collins Offshore Wind Act of 2010, that would provide critical financial incentives for the investment and production of offshore wind energy. In August, Sen. Carper sent a letter to Sec. Salazar urging the Department of the Interior to adopt a more streamlined, tailored permitting process that would better serve the offshore wind industry. He also continues to work with other Delaware leaders – like Gov. Jack Markell - to bring the Bluewater Wind offshore wind energy project to Delaware's coast.
